Did you see the moon in the weather satellite image today?

A weather satellite captured the visual image of the clouds over the United States with a rare moon shot in the image today (Dec. 4, 2012) at 21:15Z (zulu).

The image was spreading around the social media networks like Twitter and Facebook.

Was the image authentic?

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Space Science and Engineering has a robust satellite image archiving system. Using the Satellite Inventory Browser, I found an infrared and a visual satellite image taken at 21:15Z showing the moon in the image (see below).
