Back on May 1, 2007, I captured this image of Portland Police Bureau Chief Rosie Sizer at a May Day rally. Today, Sizer resigned from the police department today and was immediately replaced with veteran officer Mike Reese. The resignation comes shortly after Portland settled $1.6 million to Chasse family after James Chasse, who had mental illness, died while in police custody in 2006.
Just a few hours after Reese was appointed to his new position today, a man was shot to death by the police during a shootout in northeast Portland this afternoon. A Portland Police officer was also wounded but the injuries are non-life threatening . Reese, along with Mayor Adams, reportedly arrived at the scene.
